Dutch painter and printmaker1606–1669 3 quotes

Rembrandt van Rijn, known simply as Rembrandt, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, printmaker and draughtsman, generally considered one of the greatest visual artists in the history of Western art. His surviving works are estimated at about three hundred paintings, three hundred etchings and several hundred drawings.

Unlike most Dutch painters of the 17th century, he worked across a wide range of styles and subjects, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes, genre scenes, biblical and mythological subjects and animal studies. He never went abroad, but he was strongly influenced by the Italian Old Masters and by Dutch and Flemish artists who had studied in Italy. After early success as a portrait painter, his later years were marked by personal tragedy and financial hardship.
