Le Corbusier, born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, was a French-Swiss architectural designer, painter, urban planner and writer, described as one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Born in Switzerland to French-speaking Swiss parents, he took French nationality in 1930 and designed buildings in Europe, Japan, India and the Americas over a five-decade career.

Committed to better living conditions for residents of crowded cities, he was influential in urban planning and was a founding member of the Congrès International d'Architecture Moderne. He prepared the master plan for the city of Chandigarh in India and designed several of its buildings, especially the government buildings. In 2016, seventeen of his projects in seven countries were inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
