Joan of Arc is a patron saint of France, honoured as a defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orléans and in securing the coronation of Charles VII during the Hundred Years' War. Claiming to act under divine guidance, she became a military leader recognized as a saviour of France.

She was born to a propertied peasant family at Domrémy in northeast France. In 1428 she asked to be taken to Charles VII, later testifying that visions from the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine had guided her to help him save France from English domination. At about seventeen she was sent to Orléans with a relief army, arriving in April 1429, and nine days later the English abandoned the siege.
