Henrik Ibsen Quotes

Norwegian playwright and theatre director1828–1906 10 quotes

Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright considered one of the world's pre-eminent writers of the 19th century and often called "the father of modern drama." He pioneered theatrical realism but also wrote lyrical epic works.

His major works include Brand, Peer Gynt, A Doll's House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, The Wild Duck, Hedda Gabler and The Master Builder. In 2014 he was considered the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after Shakespeare, and the Norwegian encyclopedia Store norske leksikon calls him "the center of the Norwegian literary canon." He was born into the merchant elite of the port town of Skien and established himself as a theatre director in Norway during the 1850s. A Doll's House and An Enemy of the People are his most quoted works in our library.
