Guy de Maupassant Quotes

French writer1850–1893 10 quotes

Guy de Maupassant was a 19th-century French writer, celebrated as a master of the short story. A protégé of Gustave Flaubert, he belonged to the naturalist school and wrote about human lives and the social forces around them with a disillusioned, often pessimistic eye.

His style is spare, and his stories reach their endings with apparent ease. Many are set during the Franco-Prussian War and show civilians changed for good by events they could not control. He wrote 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books and a volume of verse. His first published story, "Boule de Suif", is often considered his most famous.
