Erasmus Quotes

Dutch Renaissance humanist, Catholic priest, and theologian1466–1536 10 quotes

Erasmus of Rotterdam was a Dutch humanist, theologian and philosopher, and one of the most influential scholars of the Northern Renaissance. A Catholic priest with a gift for clear, natural Latin, he produced pioneering Greek and Latin editions of the Christian scriptures that shaped both the Protestant and the Catholic Reformation.

His other works include The Praise of Folly, The Complaint of Peace and On Free Will. He stayed in the Catholic Church all his life and argued for reforming it from within, for peaceable agreement and for tolerance on matters of lesser importance. That middle road disappointed partisans on both sides of the religious divide.
