Archimedes of Syracuse was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, astronomer and inventor from the city of Syracuse in Sicily. Although few details of his life are known, his surviving work marks him as one of the leading scientists of classical antiquity and one of the greatest mathematicians of all time.

He anticipated modern calculus by using infinitesimals and the method of exhaustion to prove many geometrical theorems, including the area of a circle and the surface area and volume of a sphere. He derived an approximation of pi and investigated the Archimedean spiral. He was also one of the first to apply mathematics to physical phenomena, proving the law of the lever and stating the law of buoyancy now known as Archimedes' principle.
