German-born Dutch Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim1929–1945 14 quotes

Anne Frank was a German-born Jewish diarist and Holocaust victim who became known worldwide after her death for the diary she kept while in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands. In it she described her family's everyday life in a secret annex in Amsterdam from 1942 until their arrest in 1944.

She was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1929. In 1934, when she was four and a half, her family moved to Amsterdam after Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. By May 1940 they were trapped in Amsterdam by the German occupation. She lost her German citizenship in 1941 and became stateless, and she never officially became a Dutch citizen. As persecution of Jews increased in July 1942, the family went into hiding. The Diary of a Young Girl is her most quoted work in our library.

The best remedy for those who are frightened, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere they can be alone, alone with the sky, nature and God. For then and only then can you feel that everything is as it should be and that God wants people to be happy amid nature's beauty and simplicity. As long as this exists, and that should be forever, I know that there will be solace for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances. I firmly believe that nature can bring comfort to all who suffer.
