Ali ibn Abi Talib was the fourth Rashidun caliph, ruling from 656 until his assassination in 661, and the first Imam of Shia Islam. A cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, he grew up in Muhammad's household and was among the first to accept his teachings. He married Muhammad's daughter Fatima, served as his secretary and deputy, and carried the flag of his army.

His caliphate was troubled by civil war, from the Battle of the Camel to the Battle of Siffin. He is revered for his courage, honesty and devotion, and for treating all Muslims equally. Sunni Muslims count him as the last of the rightly guided caliphs; Shia Muslims venerate him as Muhammad's rightful successor. His legacy is gathered in many books, the best known being Nahj al-balagha.
